The Roswell "Memory Metal"

Much has been made throughout the years of the so-called "memory metal" that several witnesses have reported handling at the scene of the Roswell Incident in 1947. Over at "The UFO Iconoclast(s)" Mr. Anthony Bragalia has posted an article entitled, "THE FINAL SECRETS OF ROSWELL'S MEMORY METAL REVEALED" and posits some very interesting ideas.

First in Flight

When I was much younger than I am now, the subject of UFOs and the possibility of extraterrestrials visiting Earth fascinated me. I spent a great many evenings in my backyard patrolling the night sky, logging "data" (which was really just noting what I saw and when), and dreaming of someday working with MUFON. The paranormal nature of alien spacecraft and close encounters is still interesting to me, but I must admit I have lost a good deal of the childhood fascination. Still, I do peruse an occasional book on the topic and am always interested in a good story to pique my interest and imagination. It is one such story I'd like to share with you today.

Perhaps you've heard of Orville and Wilbur Wright, the brothers credited with inventing and constructing the world's first airplane, as well as achieving sustained flight in 1903. They're kind of a big deal. But did you know that some 6 years before they accomplished this most miraculous feat in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, halfway across the nation, in Aurora, Texas, there were reports that an alien spacecraft had crashed?

It's true. In April on 1897, several years before the Wright Brothers adventures in Kitty Hawk, the small town of Aurora was transfixed by the news. It seems that one curious spring morning, a cigar-shaped space craft flew over town, ran into some type of difficulties, and crashed into a windmill belonging to Judge J.S. Proctor, covering a field with various kinds of debris.

Here is the original article as it was published by local Aurora, Texas news correspondent S.E. Hayden:

As you can see, among the wreckage it was noted that a body, apparently not "an inhabitant of this world" was found, along with an alleged record of its flight travels written in what is termed as "unknown hieroglyphics." The brief mention of an astronomy expert's opinion that this being came from Mars is also mentioned.

The legend and lore has been passed down for years now. The story is that the wreckage was gathered up and deposited carelessly in the well of the land owner and that the body of the alien was buried quickly in the local cemetery, with only a small stone marker to note its existence.

Furthermore, the next owner of the land where the debris had been scattered, Mr. Rolley Oats, developed a severe case of arthritis, and what could easily be considered ugly disfigurements to his hand, which he blamed on the contaminated well water he had been drinking for 12 years. He had the well sealed over with a concrete slab which has remained intact since 1958. Until now.

In 2008, several UFO investigators were invited on the property. The well, for the first time, would be allowed to be uncovered, and we would find out once and for all if any wreckage had been deposited inside.

Right?

Well, it's never quite that easy, is it? The well was uncovered, but no wreckage was found. However, water and soil samples taken from inside did show a fair amount of aluminum. Perhaps even levels which were out of the ordinary. And rumors continue to swirl among the family and friends of Mr. Oats that, just before he had the well sealed, the old wreckage was removed and taken to a local scrap yard.

The cemetery where the alien body was allegedly buried has also been investigated. Though the marker was stolen years ago, analysis of photographs of the area of the grave site allowed it to be pinpointed. But because excavation of the site in question is not permitted, the area where the grave is purported to be was tested using high-tech, modern scanning devices. The results seemed to indicate that there was some type of grave there, as the scan revealed the ground had been disturbed and dug to the dimensions of a typical grave site. And it appeared, as well, that something was buried there. The alien body, perhaps?

So, what is the truth? Did a UFO really crash in Aurora, Texas in 1897? Was the wreckage from this crash dumped into a nearby well, and the body of its deceased pilot buried at the local cemetery? We may never know the entire truth. The case has long since gone cold and any witnesses are now deceased. Some even say the original news report was a joke, meant to help drive tourism to a city recently bypassed by a railroad and whose economy was quickly drying up.

What we do have, however, is sketchy first and second-hand information and a few pieces of interesting circumstantial evidence. It is not enough to prove or disprove anything and, in some ways, only adds to the mystery. And until the day when the grave site, and any body that may or may not be there, can be exhumed, we'll never have the answers. Of course, even in the absence of proof, old legends always die hard.
